Our Story *
At Shaggy Bark Farm we pride ourselves with hard work and doing everything by hand! We wanted to work our land and find a way to use our homestead to offer a healthy product to our community, church family, neighbors, co-workers and friends.
Shaggy Bark Farm was a blessing purchased in 2017, what looked like a neglected piece of property became the heart and soul of the couple’s life; where new growth began and visitors are always welcomed! The space became a passion and chickens started it all! The flock is now over 200 strong and provides eggs to several surrounding counties.
It’s not just eggs, there is a huge garden where produce comes to life every season and is shared at the roadside stand and on local deliveries. All the seeds are dried from the year prior, it is important to constantly keep recycling and providing our own resources.
The journey to build the farm into what it is today, was anything but easy. There are countless hours spent trimming trees, sawmilling wood, building barns, doing chores, tending to animals and making it safe! It truly takes a village and part of our village are the team members that volunteer each weekend to help with large projects and chores.
The blazing Georgia heat is no joke and water had to be run all across the farm in order to water the plants, fruit trees, garden and livestock. Every blistered hand, every late night chore, every new birth and shared prayer turned the land into a sanctuary, that is rooted in grit, love, faith and perservearance!
The homestead offers guests a chance to learn about chickens, sheep, tortoises, land, gardening, canning, freezing foods, learning about agriculture and more!
Nick is the muscle and engineer that brings the ideas to life that Jessica has! Without his ambition, drive and ability to FIX anything we would not be where we are today! He makes everything come to life. He is an ARMY veteran and enjoys spending time with Jessica and making more of the land than anyone ever thought it could be.
The land was bought in 2017 with A LOT of clean up to tackle and the soil was depleted of all nutrition. As we walked the property we noticed many of the trees had a “shag bark” appearance to them. The tall White Oaks were abundant and stretched high to the sky to create a canopy over most of our property. The name Shaggy Bark stuck and it’s known to many now! We started with a basic garden first, making homemade soups, salsa, spaghetti sauces and more! Then we started thinking about retirement and what to do with our little piece of country heaven we decided to raise free range laying hens, make vanilla, hand poured soaps and can a lot of foods for our pantry.
We have over 200 chickens in our flock. With a few Guineas, a Guardian Goose, named Groot, two Katahdin Sheep, named Margo & Rita, along with two African Spurred Tortoises, named Crater Joe & Sulena. Joe was born in 1995 and Sulena was hatched in 2015. Crater Joe was hatched in Hawaii!
Our hens, along with many roosters to protect our ladies, free range our homestead, with a predator safe barn to sleep at night. We have several varieties of laying hens and offer a rainbow of colored eggs to our customers! Nothing beats a fresh egg’s taste, quality and nutrition. Once you have had one, you will want them again and again.
Every product we sell is made by hand here at the farm; with the exception of the chemical free candles, which Jessica’s little sister makes in Pennsylvania! She pours them by hand and ships them to our homestead so that we can share a quality product with our friends and community.
Our German Shepherd mix, Dax, guards the property and maintains a sharp eye for anything he sees invading his property that he does not recognize!
We sell free range Georgia Natural eggs at our roadside stand and make local deliveries. We have shipped eggs to California, Pennsylvania and Maryland. We can ship at a special request! We package them very carefully!
We invite to shop our simple products and add them to your home!
Thank you for supporting a small veteran business.
Our greatest thanks is to our Lord & Savior, who provides for us each day!
Happy Cooking!
